Test & Measurement
The test and measurement market faces unique challenges by the very nature of the application. Test and measurement design engineers rely on WPGA Displays and Solutions to be able to supply a wide breadth of LCD and OLED selection and identify opportunities to create feature rich, high value solutions.
Because the use of LCDs is expanding so rapidly in the test and measurement market, customers are also looking for a single supplier partner like WPGA to ease the burden of sourcing from multiple vendors. WPGA recognizes that there are many niches within the test and measurement market that have difference requirements.
Standard LCD display offerings can be the simple solution to what is often the greatest challenge to the most visible and important part of the product, the users interface. Increasingly design engineers are finding that many standard, off-the-shelf display technologies do not meet all of their needs and recognize that a total engineered solution will offer the best result for more complex design needs and enriched feature options. WPGA specializes in adding value to a customer design by creating such solutions.
Consumer
Consumer displays and the products market is probably one of the most challenging of the business sectors. It is a mix of domestic and international requirements and trends. As one of the fastest moving and most technologically demanding markets you must have access to bleeding edge tech. WPGA has a very solid consumer grade offering of displays yielding our customers access to the sharpest most innovative displays without breaking the bank. These markets include television sets (TV), set-top boxes (STBs), media players, digital cameras, white goods, and high-demand personal electronic devices, etc, etc.
Optical Bonding
Optical bonded displays offer optical characteristics and mechanical robustness superior to any other solution.
Optically bonded “cover glass” can be any number of materials such as glass, polycarbonate, acrylic, touch screens, or other optically clear overlay material placed in front of the LCD. Integrated ITO Heaters and EMI/RFI shielding can be included in the bonding process if needed, providing a product that is complaint to the most extreme of requirements.
Benefits of Optical Bonding include:
• Improved Optics and Glare Reduction – Optical bonding reduces or eliminates reflection from internal and external light sources. When combined with Anti-Reflection front surface it is possible to dramatically reduce glare and increase light transmission from the assembly yielding a most satisfying and accurate viewing experience.
• Protection of the display – Displays typically have a polarizer that is a soft plastic material as the front surface. The front surface is easily scratched, even from routine cleaning. With optical bonding a protective “cover glass” is placed on the display. The optically bonded display can be further built into a system which is weatherproof, in fact we have had products which were bonded for use by divers under water.
• Safety – An optically bonded display can help contain materials in the event of breakage (an impact directly to the display or crash in a vehicle). This is well suited for transportation application and is also used in zero gravity spacecraft. A display that is easily read is also a benefit where the driver/operator heads to look away momentarily to read a display before focusing back on driving or the task at hand.
• Reduced Power – In a high ambient brightness environment an optically bonded display will allow you to turn down the installed backlight system. In fact in a sunlit environment going from 12% to 1.5% reflection will have the same effect on contrast ratio as going from 500 nits to 3500 nits. The results not only in a savings in power consumption, but also less heat is generated which must be removed from the assembly.
• Ergonomics – A display with reduced glare and sharp clear image reduces eyestrain and is essential for those whom make their living from behind the LCD. The American Optometric Association lists glare as a contributor to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and reducing glare is effective in reducing the effects of CVS.
• Dust and Moisture – By eliminating the gap between the LCD and the cover glass this area can no longer be a place where dust and moisture collect.
• Vision and Mechanical Shock – It has been demonstrated that an optically bonded display is superior at resisting the effects of vibration and mechanical shock.

Optical Enhancements
After optimizing the optics of the front of the display by reduing reflections from all materials between the display image and the viewer through AR Films, Optical Lamination and Optical Bonding the next place to focus for improvement is the backlight of the LCD.
Passive Backlight Enhancements
Many LCD displays can benefit from passive enhancements utilizing more efficient light diffusing films in the optical path and through focusing the existing light emitted from the display to the designed eye position. Passive Enhancements alone can almost double the light output of many displays.
Two of our main tools in passive enhancements is 3M Brightness Enhancement Films (BEF) and Dual Brightness Enhancement Films (DEEF). The BEF materials works by focusing light to the viewer, and the DEEF film is a reflective polarizer which actually recycles the light which would otherwise be attenuated by the rear polarizer of the display.
LED Backlights and Active Enhancements
Interactive Display Solutions Inc. can design and provide almost any commercially available display in an LED version. LED backlights provide more brightness with less power, are operational over a wide temperature range with no warm up time (instant on in all conditions), and being solid state are more robust in difficult environments.
Benefits of LED Backlights:
• More Brightness with less power consumption and less heat to remove from the system.
• Wide Temperature Operations – Instant On
• Low Voltage operation for minimal impact on EMI/RFI
• More robust when subject to mechanical shock and vibration
• NVIS compatible LED for dual mode operation
• Can be used in direct backlighting application to increase dynamic contrast
• Long life Operation and Redundancy

Passive Displays
An older technology, but still a common type of flat panel display consisting of a grid of horizontal and vertical wires. At the intersection of each grid is an LCD element which constitutes a single pixel, either letting light through or blocking it. In the mid-90s, it appeared that passive-matrix displays would eventually become extinct due to the higher quality of active-matrix displays. However, the higher cost of producing active-matrix displays, and new passive technologies that improved passive-matrix displays, have allowed passive-matrix displays to withstand the test of time. WPGA offers a wide selection of monochrome character displays and monochrome and color graphic passive displays from STN, FSTN types in COG (Chip on Glass) and COF (Chip on Flex) configurations. Just give one of our displays experts your requirements and they will match up a passive display from the hundreds of parts in our extensive arsenal.
OLED Displays
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)Displays are brighter, higher contrast displays that have fast response times, wider viewing angles and consume less power than conventional LCD technologies plus OLEDs are self-illuminating.
Devices such and instrumentation, monitors and television screens that are as thin as paper are no longer technological dreams. Ask one of our display experts to assist you with a passive OLED (POLED) or active matrix OLED (AMOLED) solution.
LCD Controllers/ Interfaces
WPGA Displays offers a complete line of controllers and interface solutions for your LCD. Analog and digital controller boards enables you to connect your AMLCD to standard graphics and video interfaces.

Touch Screen Solutions
Resistive Touch
Resistive touch screens come in 4, 5, 7 and 8 wire types. A resistive touchscreen is composed of several layers, the most important of which are two thin, electrically conductive layers separated by a narrow gap. When an object, such as a finger, presses down on a point on the panel’s outer surface the two metallic layers become connected at that point: the panel then behaves as a pair of voltage dividers with connected outputs. This causes a change in the electrical current, which is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing. Resistive Touch is one of the lowest cost touch technology. It is susceptible to damage from sharp object cutting the surface or from cracking the sensor. This being said this technology is generally not used in very harsh environments. It is used in medical, indoor HMI and light industrial applications.
Capacitive Touch
A capacitive touchscreen panel is one which consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO). As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the screen’s electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. Different technologies may be used to determine the location of the touch. The location is then sent to the controller for processing. There are two main types of capacitive touch, Surface Capacitive and Projected Capacitive.
Surface Capacitive Touch
In this basic technology, only one side of the insulator is coated with a conductive layer. A small voltage is applied to the layer, resulting in a uniform electrostatic field. When a conductor, such as a human finger, touches the uncoated surface, a capacitor is dynamically formed. The sensor’s controller can determine the location of the touch indirectly from the change in the capacitance as measured from the four corners of the panel. As it has no moving parts and is all glass constructed, this technology is very durable. Surface Capacitive Touch is most often used in simple applications such as industrial controls and kiosks.
Projected Capacitive Touch
Projected Capacitive Touch (PCT or PCAP) technology is a capacitive technology which permits more accurate and flexible operation, by etching the conductive layer. An X-Y grid is formed either by etching a single layer to form a grid pattern of electrodes, or by etching two separate, perpendicular layers of conductive material with parallel lines or tracks to form the grid (comparable to the pixel grid found in many LCD displays). The greater resolution of PCT allows operation without direct contact, such that the conducting layers can be coated with further protective insulating layers, and operate even under screen protectors, or behind weather and vandal-proof glass. Due to the top layer of a PCT being glass, PCT is a more robust solution versus resistive touch technology. Depending on the implementation, an active or passive stylus can be used instead of or in addition to a finger. This is common with point of sale (POS) devices that require signature capture. Gloved fingers may be sensed, depending on the implementation and gain settings. PCT is one of the most ruggedized technologies and often used in indoor and outdoor Kiosks, Interactive Digital Signage and POS/POI applications.
Infrared (IR) Touch
An infrared touchscreen uses an array of X-Y infrared LED and photodetector pairs around the edges of the screen to detect a disruption in the pattern of LED beams. These LED beams cross each other in a vertical and horizontal patterns. This helps the sensors pick up the exact location of the touch. A major benefit of such a system is that it can detect essentially any input including a finger, gloved finger, stylus or pen. Unlike capacitive touchscreens, infrared touchscreens do not require any patterning on the glas which increases durability and optical clarity of the overall system. IR touch systems can also come as IP65 sealed units. It is generally used in indoor and outdoor HMI applications and point-of-sale (POS)/ point-of-information (POI) systems which can’t rely on a conductor (such as a bare finger or tethered stylus) to activate the touchscreen.
